This was a direct result of the massive growth of the Roman influence at the end of the Republican period, the Pax Romana that followed the decades of civil war, and the stabilisation of the state that occurred under Augustus’ rule.

Still, Roman glasswares were already making their way from Western Asia (i.e. the Parthian Empire) to the Kushan Empire in Afghanistan and India and as far Han Empire of China; the first Roman glass found in China came from an early 1st-century BC tomb at Guangzhou. The glass was used mainly for bowls and vessels in all shapes and sizes.

For almost 2000 years, Roman glass shreds and vessels have been buried underground, creating beautiful colors, waiting to be discovered. The colors that can be seen in Roman glass today are a result of the glass reacting with climactic and geological elements - heat, water, various minerals in the earth - for Thousands of years.

How to take care of Roman glass jewelry?

ROMAN GLASS JEWELLERY TREATMENT AND CARE:

Every professional, authentic, Roman glass jeweler knows that roman glass jewelry will chemically react with any liquid – or even surface oil – that touches the glass. This will definitely cause discoloration and even disintegration of the glass over time. Since Roman glass is 2000 years old, it should be treated as such.

Here is a list of Do and Do not for the treatment of Roman glass.

    • DO NOT GET IT WET AT ALL.
    • TREAT IT AS IF IT WERE 2,000 YEARS OLD – IT IS!
    • PLEASE DON'T GO SWIMMING IN IT.
    • DON'T SHOWER IN IT.
    • DON'T HAIRSPRAY NEAR IT.
    • THE GLASS IS ORGANIC AND IS STILL REACTING WITH THE ENVIRONMENT.
    • No cleaning liquids.

Water can dissolve those beautiful layers of patina that were created ever so slowly and miraculously over two thousand years.

Roman glass may change in tones or lose some of its iridescent appearance

To clean the jewelry, polish the silver or gold with a cloth but try not to touch the glass.

    Roman Glass History

Indeed, glass objects were not made exclusively for commodity or to appeal to the prevailing aesthetic taste: the ancients in reality conceived of glass as an ideal material for the progress of knowledge. For this reason, the exhibition itinerary seeks to evidence how these cities were inhabited by men capable of working glass into apparatuses and devices which profoundly contributed to increasing the scientific and technological knowledge of antiquity and laid the basis for the “scientific” rediscovery of this material in the Renaissance.

In more general terms, Roman glass was a preferred source of inspiration in solving several fundamental theoretical problems, which led scientific curiosity onto till-then unexplored territories.

The Roman have not invented the glass. Long before them the Greek had glass. The Egyptians had it even earlier.

Indeed the invention of glass-blowing led to an enormous increase in the range of shapes and designs that glassworkers could produce, and quite rapidly mold-blowing process soon developed as an offshoot of free-blowing.

At the height of its popularity and usefulness in Rome, glass was present in nearly every aspect of daily life—from a lady's morning toilette to a merchant's afternoon business dealings to the evening cena, or dinner.

Small glass bottles and boxes held the various oils, perfumes, and cosmetics used by nearly every member of Roman society. Pyxides often contained jewelry with glass elements. Eventually, merchants and traders routinely packed, shipped, and sold all manner of foodstuffs and other goods across the Mediterranean in glass bottles and jars of all shapes and sizes, supplying Rome with a great variety of exotic materials from far-off parts of the empire. Many more uses were to follow.

In fact in order to understand how the Roman revolutionised the way - they - used glass one needs to understand how it was made prior to the 1st century. Indeed prior to "Glass Blowing" - there was the "Glass Molding". But that is for a different time.
